Strange job offer last night.

So I am at work last night, and started chatting with a customer that has been coming in a few times a month for a couple of years. He comes in, buys a few books, gets a coffee, a water, a small dessert treat and sits until we close. He is in his mid-fifties, and really friendly. Friendly to the point that I know quite a bit more than I should regarding his personal life. I never knew what he did for a living, but I know his wife died on New Years day of 2000, I know his only child is a son who is in prison for involuntary manslaughter, I know that he spends 12-18 days a week in Idaho Falls, I know that he owns 2 condos..............Anyways, I stop and chat with him for a few minutes as I am on my way by helping other customers, whatever. So he asks if I ever thought about changing jobs, and I tell him of course. He asks that on my break, I come and chat with him a minute. So, I took my break at 9:30, and sat down with him. It really started out as a job interview, and I kept waiting for the shoe to drop. He asked me what jobs I have had, what experience I have, if I had any problem relocating, what kind of money I would like to be making in 5 years, 10 years.........So I got to a certain point, and in my job interview voice, asked what all this was regarding. He tells me that he has an opening at his company, and the first person he thought about was me, because I am young, friendly, "easy to look at", female and smart. I asked him what the job was, and he told me that he had to make a couple of phone calls and would let me know. He then asked my full name, my date of birth, where I was born. He then asked if he could do a background check on me and if there was anything I would find on there. I told him no. He shook my hand, and said he would get back to me. Well, I spotted him a couple of times walking around the store, never once taking the cell phone from his ear, and when he finally caught up with me again, it was pretty close to closing. At that time, I was in the middle of helping some customers and couldn't stop and chat. He then asked what time I got off, and asked if I would meet him at Perkins to discuss a job offer. Now, this whole time, I really am waiting for the shoe to drop, but told him that I would. I have to admit, I made sure my taser worked and that I had my mace before I met him at Perkins.

So, I order coffee, and had not planned on eating until he offered to buy. As we waited for our food, he told me what the job was. He owns a company that goes around the country preparing and setting up trade shows, conventions, seminars, concerts and events. The way I understood it, his company sets up the accomodations and travel arrangements for people related to the trade shows like VIP, event coordinators, staff, etc. He also sets up catering, hires security companies if necessary and just about everything besides actually putting on the event itself.

So there was a lot of other details that I won't get in to. But if he hires me, I will be working with the woman I am replacing for a month, learning everything that she does. The job starts at $38,000 a year, but that is only the base pay. I would also get up to $1100 a month in per-diem, and I would get $600 a month towards a vehicle with a gas card. The lady I am replacing drives a Mercedes M-class SUV thingy, but it would be my choice for vehicle because I would ultimately have to get my own loan and pay for it myself. I would be gone about 15-18 days a month in the winter months (November thru January) and about 20-25 days a month in the summer. The pay is just to start, but I would also get to keep all my airline miles, and travel points for rental cars, hotels etc. I would get 3 weeks paid vacation every year, but could only take them during times when nothing was going on. I don't really know how that works, and I guess I would find out if I got the job.

He told me that the job is very stressful at times when things don't go as planned and it will happen ALL THE TIME, but that is the part of the job, and the part that none of his employees complain about. I will get to meet celebrities, rock starts, Presidents and CEO's of billion dollar companies, and movie stars. Many of the hotels that he deals with will routinely give the people in my position the best rooms in the hotel for bringing in VIP's and there is one that he wouldn't name that gives up their concierge service completely free of charge for just about anything that is asked for. He went in to the professionalism of it, how his employees are asked to carry themselves, etc. It was 2:30 in the morning before we got out of there. He shook my hand like a gentleman, and told me that he would get back to me on Monday with his decision, and that would give me the weekend to decide if I wanted to do it or not.

I seriously wanted to ask him "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? OF COURSE I WANT THE JOB!!!!!!!!" Instead, I told him that it sounded like a great opportunity, and that he gave me a lot to think about. My stomach has seriously been in knots since I woke up this morning with the anticipation of him offering me the job.
